Sergeant Major Chris Self is the definition of a hero. While on active duty with the U.S. Army in December 2005, Chris sustained gunshot wounds to both legs during a combat operation in Iraq. One of the bullets severed the sciatic nerve in his right leg, leaving it paralyzed. Congratulations to Sergeant First Class Josh Olson for earning a nomination to the 2012 Paralympic Team! While serving in Iraq in 2003, Josh was struck by a rocket-propelled grenade which resulted in the loss of his right leg from the hip down. Brett’s New Leg!, January 2012

Last week Brett was fit with a new prosthesis. During the process he spent some time with POA patient Chris Self, a Sergeant Major in the U.S. Army Special Forces. Before Chris left, he gave Brett some Special Forces patches which Brett excitedly asked us to laminate onto his new prosthetic socket. It looks awesome and he is so proud to wear it! Welcome, Caleb!

Caleb Rivera, age 21, lost his leg above the knee to osteosarcoma (bone cancer)  15 years ago. He never felt comfortable in the prosthetic limbs he was fit with over the years, and they were not durable enough for his active life. Frustrated, Caleb traded his prosthesis for crutches, and for four years that’s how he walked…..until a few weeks ago. A chance meeting between Caleb’s pastor and a POA
