Paul “Bud” Leimkuehler, a speed skater, lost his leg while serving our country during World War II. Determined not to allow his disability to keep him from living an active life, he crafted his own prosthetic leg. Later, Bud’s desire to ski led him to create ski outriggers, and he became the first amputee skier in the U.S.! His granddaughter wrote a screenplay inspired by his life, entitled “Ski Pioneer.”
Oftentimes, when you have a disability others will put limitations on you, telling you, even in a nice way, what you can’t do. Last week Brett was fit with a new prosthesis. During the process he spent some time with POA patient Chris Self, a Sergeant Major in the U.S. Army Special Forces. Before Chris left, he gave Brett some Special Forces patches which Brett excitedly asked us to laminate onto his new prosthetic socket. It looks awesome and he is so proud to wear it!
